We loved creating this civic art to enhance the Wesley Community Center Garden, with the help of neighborhood volunteers. Wesley Community Center is a Houston nonprofit that provides an array of social services – including food from the community garden – to individuals and families who need a helping hand in the Near Northside and other areas.
Our project sponsor was the American Planning Association (APA), a professional group for city planners dedicated to “creating great communities for all.” In that spirit, they engaged us last year to create placemaking projects; through them, their members could volunteer and give back locally when they attended the annual APA conference planned for Houston this year. Then the pandemic hit. The in-person conference had to be cancelled – but the APA sponsored the community-building projects regardless. Way to be true to your mission, community planners!
